It is 1948; World War II is over but the world is not in Peace. In San Francisco, Barbara Lavette, former socialite turned author and foreign correspondent, is trhing to make a life with her husband, Bernie, a poor mechanic and soldier of fortune whom she met in Paris, and their small son, Sam.
